A serious aviation incident unfolded at Nice Côte d’Azur Airport when two Airbus A320 aircraft came dangerously close to colliding. A Nouvelair flight arriving from Tunis descended toward the wrong runway and passed just meters above an easyJet plane preparing for takeoff to Nantes. The situation triggered a last-minute go-around maneuver. Thanks to the pilots’ quick reactions and professionalism, a potential disaster was narrowly avoided.
To better understand the circumstances and determine what triggered the Nice Airport incident, a safety investigation was launched by the Bureau of Enquiry and Analysis for Civil Aviation Safety (BEA).

Wrong Runway, Close Call
A Nouvelair flight from Tunis was supposed to land on runway 04L at Nice Airport but instead, it lined up for the wrong runway, 04R. That wouldn’t be a huge problem… except an easyJet plane was already there, getting ready to take off for Nantes.
The Nouvelair aircraft kept descending and got dangerously close – just about 15 meters above the easyJet plane – before the pilots commenced a go-around. The easyJet flight had to be canceled and returned to the gate.
After climbing to 4000 feet, the Nouvelair plane circled back and landed safely on the correct runway about 15 minutes later, as reported by The Aviation Herald.
The Runway Awareness and Advisory System (RAAS)
But how can we prevent runway incidents like the one that occurred at Nice Airport? Pilots are human, meaning even experts can make mistakes now and then. The problem is, in this line of work, mistakes can be deadly.
This is why pilots rely on tools to help them navigate more safely in the sky. Technology like RAAS can play a key role in preventing runway incidents like the one at Nice Airport by enhancing pilot awareness of runway alignment and aircraft position.
The Runway Awareness and Advisory System (RAAS) is a cockpit safety tool that helps prevent runway confusion, misalignment, and incursions by providing real-time audio and visual alerts based on GPS and airport data. It warns pilots if they’re approaching the wrong runway or taxiway, prompting immediate corrective action.
Fly Smarter, Land Safer
It’s really important to know how to avoid accidents during flights. In the case of the Nice Airport runway incident, findings point to weather as a potential contributing factor. This is where applications like Aviation Weather Route Planner come into play, offering pilots highly accurate, real-time weather information on the go to support safer decision-making in the air.
Other applications like Air Navigation – VFR & IFR also offer free weather-related features. Designed to make flights safer and navigation easier, the app provides advanced yet user-friendly tools for all types of pilots – including route planning, customizable maps, live weather updates, charts, terrain awareness, and more.
